On the 21st of December we shot some nice plates at Nachtbazaar in TROUW, Amsterdam. Some people knew us from Magnet Festival earlier this year, but for a lot of visitors tinypes and ambrotypes were a totally ‘new’ thing. Our first ‘sitter’ that evening was an extraordinary man with his old terrier (which fell asleep during the six sec exposure…). And his picture came out perfectly, very aristocratic look and feel. It’s a shame we don’t have a picture of that plate…

A strange gathering, but nice indeed!

I don’t know how come, but it seems there is a little angel on our schoulders when it comes to finding places and events to present the Tintype Studio. We never plan, or make reservations at all!
Again this year we were invited to tintype for two days during the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. We needed a residu for the days we weren’t there. That’s when we decided to build an installation with a big kaleidoscope and some ambro’s we made during the intended two days.
Because of the positive responses we had due to a nice interview in NRC Next that week, we couldn’t leave! So we ended up with 10 days of making tintypes en ambrotypes, a nice installation next to us and having a lot of fun.

“The Bearded Man” dark yellow glass ambrotype 18 cm x 24 cm

Sometimes we have to push ourselves to imagine how man will appear on a plate.
Sometimes it’s hard to find the face that is silverworthy.
And sometimes we’re just lucky!

Whilst busy building and working on some new ideas, I almost forgot to post these beautiful faces of beautiful people we met and shot at Magnet Festival. I’m ashamed it took me so long.

Well, at least we got an image…. But what on earth is that foggy stuff! Seems a layer of pure silver… Time for some troubleshooting: testing and remixing chemicals.
Now we know that we started out with a polluted collodion mixture (by accident we ‘melted’ a plastic measuring jug with ether). In combination with a bad batch of ammoniumiodine this is the result.
Alex’s Advice: work clean, cleaner, cleanest!!!

A one-day Wet Plate Collodion Workshop by Alex Timmermans. As a teacher Alex did really great, his workflow was inspiring and his love for this technique contagious. He gave just enough background information but soon after that the workshop turned out to be a hands-on job. We produced 8 plates!
These are the ones we love most. Our fascination for Wet Plate Colllodion became airborne that day.
